Directions for using IRBNet

If you haven't already registered with IRBNet, the directions for doing so can be found here

To submit a study for review, you must first create a 'package' to hold your documents. Any type of document can be uploaded, but two things are required before any action can be taken on behalf of the board. Your study MUST include the application form (Request for Exemption, Request for Review, Request for Continuing Review or Request for Modification) AND an informed consent document. These forms can be downloaded from this website, completed, and uploaded to IRBNet.

To create your first package:

  1. Go to www.irbnet.org and login using the user name and password you created previously.

  2. On the navigation bar to your left, click the button that says 'Create New Study'.

  3. Pick a title for your study. Enter your first and last name as Principal Investigator.

  4. The keywords box is for your reference only and will assist you later if you need to search through your studies to find one pertaining to a specific topic.

  5. If this IRB is part of a grant-funded project, enter the name of the funding agency in the Sponsor box. In order to recover part of our expense for this software, we charge a $250 fee for funded studies.

  6. Click the Continue button.

  7. You will be brought to a screen called the Study Designer. At this point, there will be a message that there are no documents attached to this study. Click the button 'Add New Document'.

  8. In the Document Type box, pick the best match for the document you are uploading. If it is the application, choose Protocol. Click the Browse button and find the document on your hard drive. Click the Attach button to upload the document.

  9. Once you have attached a document to your study package, the Study Designer page will now list your documents.

  10. Repeat the steps to upload until all documents have been uploaded to your package.

  11. When all documents are uploaded you need to sign your study electronically. To do this, click the 'Sign Study' button on the left side navigation bar. In the drop down box, choose Principal Investigator. NOTE: If you are a student doing research for a class, your professor will need to sign also as Scientific Reviewer. In order to accomplish this you will have to SHARE your study.

  12. Once you (and your professor, if necessary) have signed, click the 'Submit this Study' button on the navigation bar. The ASU IRB will be selected by default. Click Continue.

  13. On the final screen, in the 'Submission Type' drop-down menu, choose the appropriate type - in most cases New Study. You can leave comments in the Comment box, but they are not required. Finally, click the Submit button.

  14. Once you hit the Submit button, you will be given a confirmation showing the time it was submitted. Now, just sit back and wait. Someone will contact you within a week via email.

Sharing a Study

If you are a student doing IRB research for a class, you are required to have your professor's approval on study materials before they are submitted to the IRB for review. In order to do this, you much share your study with your professor.

  1. Login to www.irbnet.org. At the Study Manager screen, click the title of the study you wish to share.

  2. On the left side navigation bar, click the 'Share this Study' button.

  3. On the Share Study screen, choose Share.

  4. In the 'Search for an Organization' box, type Arkansas State. Uncheck the boxes for Boards and Sponsors, then click Display.

  5. Highlight Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, AR and click the Select Organization button.

  6. You will be brought to a screen showing all ASU faculty, staff and students who are registered with IRBNet. Scroll through the list and find the name of the person you want to share your study with.

  7. Choose a Permission Access.

    Full:

User may manage all aspects of the study. The user may give and change permissions associated with the study. You may have more than one manager to a study.

    Write:

User may co-edit the study with owner, but not give or change permissions. Any changes a person with "write" access makes to a document using the study designer will automatically transfer across to the owner's copy.

    Read:

User may only access a read-only PDF of the study. All other management features are disabled.

  8. Click the Save button. Now your study is shared. NOTE: If the person you want to share with isn't listed, they aren't registered. Send them an email and request that they do that.
