New Salary Cap
on NIH Grants, Cooperative Agreements, and
Contracts
Since
1990, Congress has mandated limiting the
direct salary that an individual may receive
under a National Institutes of Health grant.
This salary cap is linked to Executive Level
I of the Federal Pay Scale, and the
Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008
restricts this amount to $191,300, an
increase from $186,600 in 2007.
More details regarding
NIH's salary cap
are available online. Questions concerning
this notice or other policies relating to
grants or contracts should be directed to
the grants management or contracts
management office in the appropriate NIH
institute or center. (

Need for
Refocus of Workforce Investment Initiatives?
An article in the January/February issue of
Change
examines just "how many students colleges
and universities need to educate, and with
what skills and knowledge." Data on the U.S.
occupations with the most growth predicted
through 2014 refute, says the article's
author, "the now-conventional wisdom that
there is an accelerating economic demand for
workers with college degrees and that our
standing in the global economy is threatened
if we do not meet it." (continued)
FY 09 Updates
Pending
The
president's State of the Union address will
be delivered January 28, and his FY 09
budget request released February 4, 2008.
GRC staff will monitor both and will provide
analysis throughout the month of February on
what impact the Bush Administration's final
agenda will have on research, education, and
other campus activities.
